Volunteers at Batsto are planning an 1890’s Victorian Christmas celebration set for December 15th. It’s free and they are encouraging visitors to bring their Holiday greeting cards and have them processed at the oldest operating post office in New Jersey.
Batsto Village was a bog iron and glassmaking center from 1766 to 1867. There are 33 historic structures including not only the post office, but a grist mill, saw mill and the mansion.

New Jersey’s Pine Barrens is a wonderous place. A unique area that is not all pine, nor is it barren. It was given its name by early settlers who thought it barren because none of the “normal” vegetation they were used to grew there.
Most forests go through at least 3 stages. Brush, softwood, hardwood. The Pinelands has never gotten past the softwood stage. This site will discuss how the Pine Barrens evolved, and how it came to support an industry that helped build a nation.
